I came across an old e-mail from my dad in October 2003, referring to a series of blogs I posted about our family reunion the previous month.
“Your updated Sept journals,” he wrote, “describe our reunion after 17 yrs quite vividly. Though they are not sentimental, they are so warm and full of feelings. I hope your sister and brother will read them.”
I’m not entirely sure my siblings follow my various blogs, for they also keep busy lives. It was a very nice reunion my brother organized for September 2003. My dad flew from Taipei, my sister from Maui, and I from Amsterdam to east coast USA.
Seven years later in April 2010, we three siblings flew into Taiwan and stayed at a hotel near my father’s condo in Taichung. Come to think of it, those two trips were the only reunions we’ve ever had with our dad after he retired and left Okinawa in 1992.
- September 13, 2003 Family Buttons: I wrote this when I was angry. It’s funny reading again now.
- September 14, 2003 Land of Plenty: Eleven years later, I still don’t believe most Americans truly understand sustainability and the need to live frugally.
- September 15, 2003 Bargain Shopping in America: After living “abroad” for many years, I forget to ask for bargains, collect discount coupons, and shop when there’s a sale.
- September 16, 2003 Sibling Rivalry: Eleven years later, I think I’ve lost my sense of humor.
