If you already know the melody and how the song goes, you can pretty much accompany yourself by looking at a ukulele song sheet which gives the lyrics and chords. Rarely does a typical songsheet give the rhythm or what to do with your strumming and plucking hand.
To guide ukulele players on what best to do, I am launching a new series of one-hour workshops in ZOOM. Participants receive handouts and video recordings they can use until the next session.
Besides the basics of posture and position, I also answer questions like
- Which finger or fingers should I use?
- What are the different ways to produce sound?
- Should I do anything with my chord fingering hand?
- Which strum pattern is most appropriate for this song?
- What are the special effects? When are they used?
- Should I grow nails?
- Which part of the ukulele should I strum? Is there any difference?
- Is there a difference between a slow and a fast strum?
- What does calypso strum refer to? How is that different from reggae?
- What does CHK mean?
- Is muting important? When is it best used?
These are also outlined in the Three Chord Thursday goals.
