A play along video is one you can play (your instrument) along to. Also known as a playalong video, one with ukulele chord diagrams allows you to play your ukulele (hands free). Adding lyrics allows you to sing along, like karaoke. I have been experimenting with using the piano, organ, and guitar as backing tracks, giving it a fuller sound than the lonely sound of a single ukulele. Here are some samples.
By adding chords, lyrics, and other information to a recorded performance, I change the video viewing experience. The viewer can engage through participation, practice, and education. What makes a good play along video?
Any play along video should meet the following two requirements:
- proper synching: chords and lyrics must sync with the music so you can play along
- accuracy: correct chords, lyrics, etc
- audible or loud enough, so you don’t overwhelm the sound with your own playing
I would add that it should be enjoyable to play along to so you’d do it more than once so that you can practice to it and get better at it. A very good play along video will compel you to share it with others.
Here are the different kinds of play along videos I have produced since I started making videos.
Exercises
Chord Progressions
Songs with Few Chords
Songs with Many Chords
Instrumental Music with Many Chords
Many of these play along videos have been produced for Anne Ku’s Ukulele Bootcamp Course.
